The village of Matautu, Lefaga has marked a significant milestone in strengthening its disaster resilience by officially joining Samoa’s Tsunami Ready Programme . This initiative provided community members with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of tsunami hazards and learn the practical actions required to respond swiftly and effectively during an emergency.
Village leaders, women, youth, and residents actively participated in discussions on disaster preparedness , evacuation planning, and strengthening community response measures. Their strong engagement demonstrated a collective commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding livelihoods, and fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience.
The Tsunami Ready Programme is implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) through its Disaster Management Office and Meteorological Service Divisions, with the valued support of UNESCO and USAID. Through this collaborative initiative, communities across Samoa are being empowered to strengthen their preparedness and build resilience against tsunami hazards.
