The village of Tafagamanu, Lefaga has taken an important step towards enhancing its disaster resilience by becoming part of Samoa’s Tsunami Ready Programme. The programme provided an opportunity for community members to strengthen their understanding of tsunami hazards and the actions needed to respond quickly and effectively during an emergency.

Village leaders, women, youth, and residents actively participated in discussions focused on community preparedness, evacuation planning, and strengthening local response mechanisms. Their enthusiastic engagement reflects a shared commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding livelihoods, and fostering a culture of preparedness.

The Tsunami Ready Programme is delivered by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) through its
Disaster Management Office and
Sāmoa Meteorological Service Divisions, with the valued support of UNESCO and the USAID. Through this collaborative effort, communities across Samoa are being empowered to become safer and more resilient in the face of tsunami risks.
