The village of Utufaalalafa has taken another important step towards strengthening its resilience to tsunami hazards through the successful implementation of the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP). 
Led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), through the Disaster Management Office (DMO) and the Samoa Meteorological Service, the programme continues to work alongside coastal communities to strengthen preparedness through practical planning, awareness, and emergency response measures. 
A key component of the programme is the installation of official tsunami hazard zone and evacuation route signs at strategic locations throughout participating villages. 
In Utufaalalafa, these signs now provide clear guidance to residents and visitors, directing them away from tsunami hazard zones and towards designated evacuation routes and safe assembly areas. During a tsunami emergency, clear and visible signage can make a critical difference by helping people act quickly, safely, and with confidence.

The programme also involved community engagement activities, including discussions on local tsunami risks, validation of evacuation routes, and strengthening local warning dissemination and emergency response procedures. By combining local knowledge with scientific expertise, communities are empowered to take ownership of their preparedness while working towards internationally recognised Tsunami Ready indicators.
