The village of Avata Falealupo has successfully completed implementation activities under the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP), reinforcing Samoa’s ongoing commitment to building safer and more resilient coastal communities.
Coordinated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), through the Disaster Management Office and the Sāmoa Meteorological Service Divisions, the programme supports communities in strengthening their readiness for tsunami hazards through practical planning, public awareness, and improved emergency response arrangements.
As part of the programme, official tsunami hazard zone and evacuation route signs are installed at key locations throughout participating villages. These signs provide clear directions to designated evacuation routes and safe assembly areas, helping residents and visitors navigate quickly to higher ground during a tsunami emergency.
The programme activities also include reviewing local tsunami hazards, confirming evacuation routes, identifying safe assembly areas, and strengthening local warning and response procedures. By combining technical expertise with local knowledge, the initiative helps communities build confidence and preparedness while working towards internationally recognised Tsunami Ready indicators.
Each participating village represents another important milestone in Samoa’s journey towards becoming a safer, stronger, and more tsunami-ready nation.
The Ministry acknowledges the commitment and cooperation of the people of Avata Falealupo throughout the programme and extends its sincere appreciation to UNESCO and USAID for their continued financial and technical support in advancing tsunami preparedness across Samoa.
