The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and KVAConsult, successfully conducted a GACMO Refresher Training Programme at Tanoa Hotel, Apia, from Thursday 22 โ Friday 23 January 2025.
GACMO, is a key analytical tool used to support national climate change mitigation planning and reporting. The training aimed to refresh and strengthen participantsโ understanding of the GACMO 8-Step Methodology, with a strong emphasis on practical application.
The key objectives of the training were to:
Refresh participantsโ knowledge of the GACMO 8-step methodology
Build practical skills in updating baseline data and mitigation scenarios
Strengthen capacity in Marginal Abatement Cost (MAC) curve analysis and interpretation
Ensure alignment of GACMO outputs with Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) requirements and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) tracking
Participants included representatives from MNRE, Electric Power Corporation (EPC), Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure (MWTI), Land Transport Authority (LTA), Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour (MCIL), Samoa Bureau of Statistics (SBS), and other relevant sector stakeholders. This multi-sectoral participation reflects Samoaโs collective commitment to advancing coordinated and data-driven climate action.
The training programme represents an important step towards strengthening national technical capacity and enhancing Samoaโs ability to implement effective, evidence-based mitigation strategies in support of its climate commitments.
