The Government of Samoa formally received a donation of fifty (50) generators from the Government of the People’s Republic of China during an official handover ceremony held at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) Building in Tuanaiamato on January 23, 2026.

The donation marks a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between Samoa and China, reflecting shared values, mutual trust, and a firm commitment to cooperation for the benefit of both nations.

In his keynote address, the Honourable Minister for Natural Resources and Environment, Afioga Ale Vena Ale, highlighted the significance of the assistance, stating that “this donation of fifty generators is not only a response to our immediate needs but also a meaningful contribution to Samoa’s resilience and capacity to prepare for future challenges.”

The Minister noted that the support comes at a critical time as Samoa continues to face increasing energy consumption demands while advancing its transition towards a low-carbon economy. Recent widespread power disruptions have had significant impacts on economic activity and daily life, leading to the declaration of a Proclamation of Emergency during March–April 2025.

The generators will play a vital role in stabilizing electricity supply by providing reliable standby power during emergencies and natural disasters, particularly for vulnerable households and key institutions delivering essential services.

Each generator has a capacity of fifteen kilowatts at fifty hertz and will support both immediate operational requirements and longer-term national resilience objectives.

The Government of Samoa conveyed its sincere appreciation to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for their continued support and generosity, acknowledging the donation as a tangible demonstration of enduring friendship and cooperation.
