The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) and the Sosaiete Faโ€™asao Samoa (SFS) have taken a significant step forward in advancing Samoaโ€™s environmental governance through the formalization of a strategic partnership. This was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Vailima Botanical Garden on July 21, 2025โ€”a milestone in the collective national effort to protect Samoaโ€™s environment and natural heritage for both current and future generations.
โ–ถ๏ธIn her official remarks, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MNRE, Afioga Lealaisalanoa Frances Brown Reupena emphasized that the โ€œMOU represents more than a legal arrangement; it is a reflection of a shared commitment to protecting and conserving Samoaโ€™s precious ecosystemsโ€. She acknowledged the critical role of civil society organizations such as SFS in advancing national environmental priorities, noting that the Ministry cannot achieve its stewardship responsibilities in isolation.
โ–ถ๏ธShe acknowledged the vital role that civil society organizations such as SFS play in supporting the Ministryโ€™s mandate. โ€œEnvironmental stewardship cannot be achieved in isolation,โ€ she stated. โ€œSFS has consistently demonstrated leadership in key areas such as endangered species recovery, forest restoration, and community-led conservation initiatives.โ€
โ–ถ๏ธLealaisalanoa also emphasized that the collaborative work of SFS aligns strongly with Samoaโ€™s key national strategies, including the Pathway for the Development of Samoa (2022โ€“2026), the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), and the National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plan (NISSAP). Furthermore, these initiatives support Samoaโ€™s broader commitments under regional and international environmental frameworks.
โ–ถ๏ธThe MOU provides a platform to strengthen future collaboration through improved coordination, joint research, data sharing, strategic planning, and the implementation of community-based conservation programs. The CEO extended her appreciation to SFS for their enduring support and substantive contributions to the Ministryโ€™s mission. โ€œLet this MOU not merely exist in principle, but be brought to life through meaningful action, innovation, and inclusive community engagement,โ€ she urged.
โ–ถ๏ธThe Ministry reiterated its dedication to working in close partnership with SFSโ€”grounded in mutual respect, transparency, and a shared vision of a sustainable and resilient Samoa.
