The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), through its Samoa Meteorological Service Division (SMD) is progressing the development of Samoaโs National Strategic Plan and Framework for Weather, Climate, and Ocean Services (SP-NFWCOS)โa pivotal initiative designed to elevate the countryโs environmental monitoring and risk management capabilities.
๐นRooted in the Meteorology, Geoscience and Ozone Act 2021, this initiative aims to comprehensively assess and align the delivery of meteorological, climate, geoscience, and ocean services with Samoaโs national and regional priorities. Central to this process is the recognition of Samoaโs unique vulnerability to climate-related hazards, and the corresponding need for robust, inclusive, and evidence-based systems for environmental intelligence.

๐นThe SP-NFWCOS will not only strengthen the operational and legislative role of SMD, but also ensure that all Samoansโacross ministries, sectors, civil society, and villagesโare better equipped to access, understand, and act upon critical weather, climate, and ocean information.
๐นTodayโs session was an internal consultation exclusively for MNRE staff, intended to deepen understanding of the SP-NFWCOS objectives, clarify strategic roles, and foster greater alignment across all relevant divisions within the Ministry.
๐นBy establishing a clear strategic direction for meteorological and environmental services, the SP-NFWCOS will serve as a guiding tool for enhancing service delivery, coordination, and decision-making across sectors. It reflects MNREโs determination to build institutional resilience and deliver timely, accessible, and relevant information to support sustainable development and disaster risk reduction in Samoa.
