The 3rd of October marked a significant milestone towards the establishment of the โKing Charles III Mangrove Marine Sanctuaryโ at Nonoโa, Saleimoa Village.The day was dedicated to two of the project’s core activitiesโsetting up a mangrove nursery and delivering community awareness campaigns.The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) also took the lead in delivering an awareness program, educating the community on the importance of mangroves and their crucial role in preserving Samoaโs unique coastal ecosystems, as well as supporting sustainable livelihoods.This program aimed to empower the Nonoโa Saleimoa community and other participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure the success of the sanctuary and promote long-term ecological and economic benefits.The event was a collaboration among key partners, including the Nono’a Saleimoa community, MNRE, Rotary International, and the Rotary Club of Apia. The enthusiasm and commitment of all stakeholders underscore the power of collective action in achieving lasting environmental impact and promoting sustainable development.The establishment of the mangrove nursery will not only support the sanctuaryโs restoration efforts but will also serve as a learning platform for the community, providing opportunities to engage in hands-on mangrove planting and maintenance activities.Stay tuned as we continue to implement activities leading up to the official launch of the โKing Charles III Mangrove Marine Sanctuaryโ during CHOGM in October.Together, we are laying the groundwork for a greener, more sustainable future for Samoaโs coastal landscapes!
