Savaia, Lefaga has officially renewed its commitment to prepare for, respond to, and recover from tsunami hazards through Samoa’s Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, following the review consultations to assess their existing Tsunami Response Plan and the installation of new and additional tsunami signages.
These efforts demonstrate the village’s strong commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness and safeguarding its community from tsunami threats.
Savaia village holds a special place in the history of the programme, being the first and only village not only in Samoa but across the Pacific Region to pilot the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme in 2017.
The programme provided an important opportunity for village leaders, women, youth, and community members to deepen their understanding of tsunami hazards , strengthen evacuation planning , and explore practical actions to improve community safety and resilience . Their enthusiastic participation reflected the value of working together to ensure the village is well prepared before an emergency occurs.
Led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) through its Disaster Management Office and Meteorological Service Divisions, the programme is delivered with the support of UNESCO and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This partnership continues to equip communities across Samoa with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to strengthen resilience against natural hazards.
