The Ministry with the support of
SPREP visited 10 communities across Upolu and Savaii last month, to introduce the coral restoration programme and, seek community support and, guidance before any activities were undertaken.

Last week, those discussions turned to action.

Working alongside communities in Falealupo, Manase, Fagamalo, Asaga and Lano, MNRE and
SPREP completed the first phase of restoration activities, installing four coral nurseries, 49 reef stars and, 1609 coral fragments to support reef recovery and, resilience.

The programme aims to support the recovery and, resilience of coral reefs that provide habitat for marine life, help protect Samoa’s coastlines and sustain the livelihoods and, wellbeing of communities. It is also aligns with the implementation of the Samoa Ocean Strategy and, the Pacific Coral Reef Action Plan with the vision of improving the resilience and, health of coral reef ecosystems.

The newly established nurseries will provide the source of coral fragments for future restoration efforts in the coming months, while reef stars create stable structures that allow corals to grow and form new reef habitat over time.

The sites will be revisited by the team in September for monitoring coral survival and growth, and in the meantime the communities will assist with maintenance, clearing of seaweed and, ensuring the restoration structures remain safe and, undisturbed.

These sites build on ongoing restoration efforts elsewhere in Samoa, expanding the network of communities working together to support healthy and, resilient coral reefs.

The Ministry acknowledges
SPREP, the participating communities and, the funding support through the EU Pacific BioScapes Programme and, the Marine ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change Phase 2 project funded by the Government of Monaco, for supporting Samoaβs coral reef restoration efforts.
