Signing of Agreements Land Compensation Tiavea Airport Project

The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Government of Samoa (GoS) and the Village of Tiavea took place today in addition to the signing of Deed of Settlement between the GoS and families whose lands have been used for the Airport Project in Tiavea. Honourable Fiame Naomi Mataafa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment conducted the MOA signing.

The Village of Tiavea is represented by the Tu’ua title Tuiavii and the Village Mayor or Government representative plus other selected matais of the village Committee. Their contribution, support and presence as guardians of the Airport for their “Pule Faamalumalu” is fully acknowledged and recognized.

Eleven (11) Lots of Land are affected of which 3 families have completed all the relevant requirements for the confirmation of the title for the funds disbursed as compensation of their lands taken by GoS. Other families are in the process of finalizing these completion of which compensation would then be paid out.


All payment of compensations today for village and families is for the Phase 1 of the 3 phases which the disbursement of funds are allocated into.
50% on signing the Agreements, 40% on the satisfactory progress of the works and the final 10% on full completion and opening of the Airport.
It is anticipated that the Project would be completed by July/August 2019. Total cost estimated for the building of the Project is $10M. Land compensation estimated at $4M Tala is funded under the Ministry of Finance (MOF).
