SAMOA 2nd NDC Road Map and Investment Plan VALIDATION WORKSHOP

The Ministry through its Renewable Energy Division had completed its final validation workshop on Samoa’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Implementation Road Map and Investment Plan workshop on Tuesday 17th August 2021 at Taumeasina Resort.  The purpose of the workshop is to facilitate discussions amongst the relevant sectors on potential opportunities to assist in achieving Samoa’s  2nd NDC submitted to the UNFCCC in July 2021.

The Assistant Chief Executive Offier (ACEO) – Susuga Vainalepa Toiata Uili delivered the opening remarks on behalf of Madame Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Ms Frances Reupena.

Today, we aim to engage with all of our selected sectors and respective government ministries in validating proposed project opportunities that will and can assist in achieving our NDC targets. We anticipate to set out practical steps and tangible projects (if implemented in the future) to accelerate the implementation of NDC actions in this Road Map and Investment Plan.  Furthermore, this is an opportunity to validate our current climate actions and raise concerns that may restrict us from achieving our NDC target, encourage information sharing and transparency in our selected sectors as it will address and identify all necessary information crucial for Samoa’s way forward for its sustainable development.” ~ says Vainalepa in her remarks.

Samoa’s 2nd NDC builds on the progress of its 2015 INDC and presents ambitious targets addressing both mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The updated target presented is ‘to reduce overall GHG emissions by 26 percent in 2030 compared to 2007 levels’. This economy-wide emissions reduction target addresses sector specific mitigation and adapations targets from the energy sector (including electricity, land and maritime transport, and tourism sub-sectors), waste sector, marine sector (focusing on mangrove forests)  and the agriculture, forestry, and other land-use (AFOLU) sector.

The Ministry acknowledges the Regional  Pacific NDC Hub, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI),Castalia, Pacific Community (SPC), SPREP and UNDP for the tireless commitment they have demonstrated in preparation of this validation workshop for the NDC Road Map and Investment Plan.
