As Samoa continues to strengthen its national response to climate change \"\ud83c\udfdd\ufe0f\"<\/span>, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) \"\ud83c\udf43\"<\/span>, through its Climate Change Division \"\ud83c\udf21\ufe0f\"<\/span>, is advancing important work to better understand and address climate-related loss and damage .<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A national workshop was recently convened on August 7, 2026 at the Sheraton Hotel Conference Room \"\ud83c\udfe2\"<\/span>, to present the preliminary findings from Objective 1 of the Loss and Damage Project \"\ud83d\udcca\"<\/span>, which focused on fieldwork and community consultations across Samoa \"\ud83d\udde3\ufe0f\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The workshop invited representatives from Government ministries \"\ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f\"<\/span>, development partners \"\ud83e\udd1d\"<\/span>, communities \"\ud83c\udfe1\"<\/span>, civil society organisations \"\ud83d\udc65\"<\/span>, and other key stakeholders to discuss findings from the project\u2019s fieldwork and community consultations carried out in the previous weeks across Upolu, Savaii and Manono \"\ud83c\uddfc\ud83c\uddf8\"<\/span>. The initiative aims to support evidence-based approaches \"\ud83d\udcd1\"<\/span> to addressing climate-related loss and damage in Samoa \"\ud83c\udf3a\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Climate-related loss and damage is not an abstract concept for Samoa \"\ud83c\udf0a\"<\/span>. From floods \"\ud83c\udf0a\"<\/span> and landslides \"\u26f0\ufe0f\"<\/span> to coastal erosion \"\ud83c\udfd6\ufe0f\"<\/span> and rising sea levels \"\ud83d\udcc8\"<\/span>, communities across the country are already experiencing impacts that affect livelihoods \"\ud83d\udcbc\"<\/span>, infrastructure \"\ud83c\udfd7\ufe0f\"<\/span>, ecosystems \"\ud83c\udf3f\"<\/span>, and areas of cultural significance \"\ud83d\uddff\"<\/span>. These realities highlight the importance of strengthening Samoa\u2019s capacity to understand \"\ud83e\udde0\"<\/span>, document \"\ud83d\udcdd\"<\/span>, and respond to climate-related impacts \"\ud83d\udee1\ufe0f\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The fieldwork and community consultations under Objective 1 mark an important milestone \"\ud83d\udccd\"<\/span> for Samoa as one of the first systematic efforts to gather community perspectives on climate-related loss and damage \"\ud83c\udfaf\"<\/span>. The knowledge \"\ud83d\udca1\"<\/span>, experiences \"\u2728\"<\/span>, and voices \"\ud83c\udf99\ufe0f\"<\/span> shared by communities provide valuable insights into the impacts they face and will help shape appropriate and effective responses \"\ud83c\udfaf\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

During the workshop \"\ud83d\udc65\"<\/span>, stakeholders reviewed the preliminary findings \"\ud83d\udd0e\"<\/span>, shared perspectives \"\ud83d\udde3\ufe0f\"<\/span>, and provided feedback \"\ud83d\udcac\"<\/span> to strengthen the understanding of loss and damage in the Samoan context \"\ud83c\udf3a\"<\/span>. Discussions also reinforced the importance of collaboration \"\ud83e\udd1d\"<\/span> between Government \"\ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f\"<\/span>, communities \"\ud83c\udfe1\"<\/span>, development partners \"\ud83c\udf10\"<\/span>, civil society, and other stakeholders in building climate resilience \"\ud83d\udee1\ufe0f\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The consultation findings will contribute to Samoa\u2019s ongoing efforts to strengthen its policy \"\ud83d\udcdc\"<\/span> and institutional response \"\ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f\"<\/span>, support access to international climate finance \"\ud83d\udcb0\"<\/span>, and improve national preparedness \"\ud83d\udea8\"<\/span> for current and future climate impacts \"\ud83d\udd2e\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
