On Monday 8th of June 2026 \"\ud83d\udcc5\"<\/span>, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), through its GEF7 Samoa IAS project \"\ud83c\udf3f\"<\/span>, proudly handed over the first lot of essential IT equipment \"\ud83d\udcbb\"<\/span>\"\ud83d\udcf1\"<\/span> to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries \u2013 Biosecurity Division \"\ud83e\uddea\"<\/span>, in order to strengthen biosecurity by equipping their expanding biosecurity laboratory at Matutu Wharf \"\ud83d\udccd\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The handover included: One 98-inch conference display monitor \"\ud83d\udcfa\"<\/span> to support coordination, two standing cold storage refrigerators \"\ud83e\uddca\"<\/span> to support laboratory work and sample storage, three Samsung tablets \"\ud83d\udcf1\"<\/span> and three Dell laptops \"\ud83d\udcbb\"<\/span> which will boost data collection and analysis capabilities \"\ud83d\udcca\"<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Ministry has been working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries through its Biosecurity Division to strengthen national capacity to screen for, identify and control prioritised Invasive Species \"\ud83d\udc1b\"<\/span>. The expansion of the biosecurity laboratory at Matautu Wharf as well as equipping the laboratory with the necessary diagnostic tools \"\ud83d\udd2c\"<\/span> will strengthen frontline diagnostics and enhance the capacity of the Biosecurity staff in preventing new pest incursions,\u201d explained Suemalo Tumutalie Foliga, MNRE\u2019s Acting Chief Executive Officer.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Tagaloa Tanumafili Seuao, Acting Assistant Chief Executive Officer for MAF-Biosecurity Division, thanked the MNRE GEF7 Samoa IAS Project \"\ud83e\udd1d\"<\/span> as he received the equipment on behalf of MAF and expressed that the support reflects a strong partnership between the two Ministries.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The MNRE GEF7 Samoa IAS project will be working with MAF over the following months to renovate and refurbish its Biosecurity laboratory at the Matautu Wharf \"\ud83c\udfd7\ufe0f\"<\/span> as well as the procurement of additional technical laboratory equipment such as stereo microscopes \"\ud83d\udd2c\"<\/span>, diagnostic network cameras \"\ud83d\udcf7\"<\/span>, and specimen ovens \"\ud83d\udd25\"<\/span>, to name a few.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Ministry through the GEF-7 Samoa IAS project, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility \"\ud83c\udf0d\"<\/span> and working in close partnership with UNDP in Samoa, Cook Islands, Tokelau & Niue<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>, is equipping and empowering local communities to safeguard Samoa\u2019s indigenous species \"\ud83c\udf31\"<\/span>, natural ecosystems \"\ud83c\udf34\"<\/span>, and food production systems \"\ud83c\udf43\"<\/span> from Invasive Alien Species (IAS) \"\ud83d\udc1c\"<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
